11th International Symposium of Literary Translation from UNEAC. The 11th International Symposium of Literary Translation, announced by the section of Literary Translation from the Writers Association from UNEAC and the Asociación Cubana de Traductores e Intérpretes (Cuban Association of Translators and Interpreters) (ACTI in Spanish), was inaugurated on November 23 and it will last until November 25, which was made known in a press conference in the Guillén salon from that institution.The encounter was presided over by Doctor Lourdes Arencibia Rodríguez, President of the Section of Literary translation.
As it is usual the event, which takes place in the Martínez Villena room from the Union of Writers and Artists from Cuba, will gather a group of important specialists, teachers as well as national and foreign students, dedicated to literary translation in its every aspect.
The symposium presented around sixteen presentations and projects which will be used as platforms for the exchange of practical experiences and debates characterized by the many approaches, perspectives and current theoretical trends in this field.Teaching, editorial treatment, conceptual and ethical approach of the translation to the original language and its aspects will be thematic axis of these debates.
The same is the case with the relationship between authors, translator and editor as well as the spaces of the literary translator in the history of this discipline.Apart from the debates there are activities that include the master conferences
Traduciendo Poetas del Caribe Inglés para el público del Caribe de habla española, by Keith Ellis, Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Havana and Professor from Toronto University, in Canada;
Cinco lectores de un texto problematic, by Francisco Diaz Solar, UNEAC representative and
Los espacios de la traducción en las revistas culturales de la primera mitad del siglo XX en Cuba, by Dr Lourdes Arencibia Rodríguez, which will also constitute the closing of the event.
On November 24 morning, representatives from the Cuban Book Institute undertook a special intervention about the Coloquio El traductor y el editor, to take place in the context of the coming Havana International Festival, to take place on February 2012.On that same day, but on the afternoon, Dr Yolanda Wood, director from the Study Center for the Caribbean from the Casa de las Américas, was in charge of the presentation of the multimedia Anales del Caribe.
Literary translation aims mainly to mold the importance of poetic communication, which implies that it has aesthetic functions, by establishing a poetic perspective of the text.The most important thing of the translating-literary process is the unquestionable fact of propitiating a greater opportunity to take hold of knowledge for a greater and most diverse segment of readers.This complex process requires a great skill from the translator and it contributes substantially to the promotion of universal literary heritage.
